Lynwood Unified elementary school students explored future academic and career pathways during the District’s second annual Explore Your Future: College and Career Fair on September 27. Held at Bateman Hall, the all-day event showcased opportunities in high school, college and career technical education (CTE), giving nearly 1,000 students a glimpse of what lies ahead.
Primarily designed for fifth graders from all 12 Lynwood Unified elementary schools, the event also welcomed approximately 160 fourth and sixth graders. Students explored the diverse CTE programs offered at Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools, such as culinary arts, engineering, film and video production, photography and biomedical sciences, inspiring curiosity and interest.
“I want to be a nurse when I grow up because I want to help people,” Lugo Elementary School fifth-grader Irany Lugo said. “I was able to talk to the high school students who were interested in the same things. They taught me how to give a baby CPR. It was cool.”
Students also got a sneak peek at college life by chatting with representatives from Compton College, Charles Drew University, Cerritos College, California State Long Beach and Cerritos College-cosmetology.
For students looking for career advice, local community partners – including Think Together, L.A. Airport Police, Wesley Medical Center, National College Resource Foundation, Los Angeles Sanitation District and Esports/STEAM – were on hand to provide guidance, demonstrating the extensive support network available to Lynwood Unified students.
